Cosmetic packaging is part of product branding. The material, shape, color and durability of the packaging plays a big role when it comes to marketing the cosmetic product. With any cosmetic product, the packaging of the product is one of the largest contributing factors to increasing sales. In order to make these expensive products last a long time and perform at their best, it’s important that they are packaged correctly. Cosmetic companies have created some innovative containers that make them more effective, stylish, and economical.

Cosmetic packaging is available for all different types of cosmetics, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Anyone interested in this type of packaging should choose based on the material they are putting into the container. Listed below are the most common types of packaging that are used.

Jars and pots are commonly used for face creams, lotions, foundations, lip balms, powders and other cosmetics. These range in sizes from 20mm to 60mm and can hold anywhere from 25ml (or less) to 250ml. Shapes include: oval, square, round and some are even square with round pots in the middle of them. Materials used include: glass, acrylic, acrylic glass, polyethylene terephthalate and many others. These are used because they are lightweight, affordable and easy to fill with either liquid or dry cosmetics.

Large sticks are commonly used for things like lip stick, lip balm, concealers and other creamy forms of cosmetics. Some containers twist up while others push up manually. The heights of these containers range in sizes and generally top out at 100m. The shapes include round, oval, cylinder and many others. The materials used are normally plastic, aluminum or metal and the capacity ranges from 5ml to 15ml.

Compacts are generally used for foundation, eye shadow, blush, bronzer and many other different types of makeup. Circular compact cases are the most common and are normally used for foundations, blushes and bronzers. There are also rectangular cases that are commonly used for eye shadow pallets inside. Other shapes include: oval, round and square. There are also some compacts that double stack and others that have removable wells. Plastic is the most commonly used material because it’s lightweight and affordable. The sizes vary from 50mm and under to 200mm, and that normally depends on the shape of container that is chosen. Most compacts are equipped with mirrors on the lid to help with makeup application.

Vials are commonly used for lip glosses and mascaras because they are tubes with tops that can be inserted into the tube for makeup application. The materials these are made out of include: plastic, acrylic, aluminum, nylon and many others. The most common shapes are cylindrical, but there are also convex, round and square shapes available. These have thick walls with plastic caps that hold sticks that apply the makeup. Capacity for these ranges from 5ml to 15ml and will depend on the height and shape of the container.

Tubes are normally used for eye creams, lotions, face creams and also foundations or gels. They are most commonly made from low density polyethalene or high density polyethalene, and have various top shapes that can be used. Triangular toppers are common because these allow the user to push out as much product as they need with precision. Push tops are also common for cosmetics that need controlled amounts produced with each pump. Tube diameters range from 16mm to 50mm and the capacity ranges from 5ml to 240ml. There are also various lengths that can be chosen based on the diameter and capacity choices that are made.

There are many factors that go into the decision making process for designing and creating cosmetic containers. Some of these factors are general decisions such as materials and graphics while others are specific to the type of product being sold. Different types of cosmetics call for specific types of packaging and materials. There are some materials that are more cost-efficient for the manufacturer as compared to others.

Acrylic containers are the most common type of cosmetic packaging because it is durable, affordable and very easy to customize. A large quantity of acrylic containers can be mass produced within days. This type of container can be made in the form of bottles, jars, tubes or pallets, depending on the cosmetic that needs to be packaged. Although acrylic containers are usually clear, they can be tinted or frosted. These resemble the appearance of glass, although they are not as prone to breaking and they are much lighter.

PP plastic containers are very affordable and they are of excellent quality. This type of material is usually used for products such as lotion, eye shadow pallets, soap dishes and other types of cosmetics. It is a lot softer than acrylic plastic, and not as durable. However, PP plastic containers are much more cost-efficient and can be mass-produced in a shorter amount of time. These containers can be either air-tight or refillable, depending on the attachment that is used. PP plastic containers are available in bottle, jar, tube or pallet form.

PP plastic containers and acrylic plastic containers can be covered with an aluminum plate. This can be attached to either the entire container or just a portion of the packaging. Aluminum sheets are very thin and they give a elegant metallic effect. The sheet can be tinted with almost any color and will be attached using a suitable adhesive. Aluminum is usually used for jar lids, finger spray collars or cover accents.

High-end products are usually seen in glass bottles. This type of cosmetic packaging is used for products such as perfume, foundation, beauty cream and other items. They can be fitted with a PP plastic lid or cover or one made of acrylic plastic. Smaller bottles used for perfumes can be fitted with an aluminum coated PP plastic finger sprayer. These usually have smooth, locked collars which cannot be removed. This type of cosmetic packaging can be tinted or frosted. It can also be lightly powder coated which can cover the entire container, or form a partial gradient. Containers of this type are thick and heavy, they are also prone to breakage.

Lipstick, lip gloss and mascara tubes are usually made from a variety of materials. They come in a mixture of acrylic plastic, aluminum sheets, LDPE plastic, PP plastic and PS plastic. The outer layer can be either PP plastic, a thin acrylic or an aluminum sheet. These are usually silk screened for design or a sticker with the brand name can be attached. The inside of the tubes are usually PS plastic or aluminum, depending on the product.
